• Fresh Spring Day - Michael Beaty

What I like about pictures like this is how they can convey the beauty of a scene that not everyone sees while standing looking at it. My wife says I should have a bumper sticker that says "I brake for trees". That was how this shot was found. While driving through the countryside near Paso Robles I saw this tree in the field. With a careful selection of angle and cropping the pictures looks as if there is nothing else around for miles. I just love it.

The image is a blend of three exposures that all were increasing underexposed by 1/3 of a stop. This was so I could get a much detail and contrast in the clouds as possible. I also had a circular polarizer and a neutral density gradient filter on the lens when I shot the images.

In Lightroom I cropped, sharpened, added a few saturation ticks, and adjusted for the lens distortion, chromatic aberration and vignetting.
 • It took me a while to get this shot right. I sat with my camera on a tripod and a remote shutter release attached. Every time a bird would come by I would snap a picture. I was finally rewarded with this image.

Amateur Black & White

Something about the picture
The body of water in the picture is the Salton Sea in Southern California. This was on the South East end of the lake.

This was one of those pictures that make it so I should have the bumper sticker "I brake for pictures.". I had been in this area to visit the volcanic mud pots and found this one the way.
It was mid afternoon when I came across these trees. The sky was a thin overcast and the day had that heavy humid summer thunderstorm feel to it.
This scene struck me as iconic for the lake. To me it feels like a dead lake and this is sign on the door that says so.

Photoshop info:
I used the black and white filter to convert the color image. I purposely altered the contrast so that the sky would nearly blend into the water and the trees would stand out.

This is eight images stitched together. Each image was taken with the camera in portrait orientation.
 •
Leaf Cutters

Tabacon, Costa Rica
We were staying at the Lost Iguana Inn and went for a walk in the nearby jungle. We came across several lines of these ants. This was the only one that we found crawling across a branch.

Honorable Mention

Just after passing the entrance gate we started to notice the beautiful scened of the Merced River. We noticed this pool and stopped for some pictures. We were rewarded with some amazing reflections in the water.
